Princes Califia or Calijfia (also spelled 'Calafia') was the heroine of a popular Spanish novel by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo in the early 1500's, during the period the Spanish were (re)discovering lower California.

The warehouse of the 'Dutch West Indies' Company in Amsterdam was built in 1642. At the same time 'New Amsterdam', which later became New York, began to rapidly expand from a frontier settlement into a city. |

Afrikaans is a form of Dutch similar to several of the dialects spoken in Flanders in the 18th century. Some of the "new" grammar of 'California Dutch' is based on Afrikaans.
