        Page Under Construction- Will deal with Flemish Language Instruction in Northern California, with an emphasis on Stanford University.  Stanford has numerous ties to Flanders via President Herbert Hoover- Stanfords most famous student.  President Hoover is a hero to the Flemish people for the work he did to help rebuild Flanders following World War I.
       One of the strengths of Stanford is that from it's inception it has, like Medieval Burgundy and Flanders, incorporated both a Latin focus on living well and a Germanic focus on work and functionality.
       The page will highlight some similarities between Stanford and Cluny- the medieval heart of Burgundy.

        Stanford University was built as a memorial to Leland Stanford Junior who died at fifteen. ie shortly before he would have gone to college.  The Main Quad is a monument to the memory of Leland Sr..  The architecture is intended to focus students' attention on the central Memorial Chappel- which also serves as the 'See' of the 'Land of Zinfandel'.

        For several hundred years in the middle ages, Cluny was considered to be the best administered place in Europe.  Monks who were trained at Cluny were sought after to become administrators elsewhere.  The cathedral at Cluny was the biggest structure in Europe for five hundred years.

      The motto of Stanford "Die Luft der Freiheit Weht!" is a quote by Ulrich von Hutten, a German philosopher from the 1600s.  The Dutch variant of the quote is "De Lucht der Vrijheid Waait!", and can be found in numerous Dutch publications from the mid 1800s- a time many of the first professors at Stanford and many Dutch scholars were attending school in Germany.  The mid-1800s was a time of revitalization of German higher education.
